Director's Message

Exciting things are happening at UC Santa Cruz! In the past few years, the community of scholars engaged in archaeological research at UC Santa Cruz has grown dramatically, not just in anthropology, the traditional home of archaeology programs in many North American institutions, but across all five academic divisions. Departments in Social Sciences, Humanities, Arts, Physical and Biological Sciences, and Engineering are now home to scholars who use a wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches to generate new perspectives on the human past.

Because of this recent surge of interest in archaeological approaches to the past at UCSC, we established the Archaeological Research Center to formalize established relationships across campus, and encourage new ones. It is our greatest hope that this new institutional context will foster a new generation of creative archaeological inquiry on campus and beyond. Please join us in this exciting new venture, and I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.
